Battle Of The Big Dress: Angie Harmon Vs. Winona Ryder At The 2011 Sag Awards
Admittedly, Angie Harmon’s SAG dress has a lot more VOLUME than Winona Ryder’s option, but both girls ran with the same theme. Think fairytale chic.
Here’s Angie and Winona walking the red carpet during the 2011 SAG Awards which were held at the Shrine Auditorium in LA last night. Which 2011 SAG dress do you prefer?
I can’t help but wonder: WHAT was Winona Ryder told that caused that look of surprise on her face?
Winona stopped outside of ITV studios in London after an interview to sign autographs and apparently, someone shocked her. I hope we get to see more of her during the awards season. Did you see her in ‘Black Swan‘? Amazing!
We read a bit about how Winona Ryder thinks Mel Gibson is “homophobic” yesterday afternoon while reading her recent GQ interview. Today, we learn more about the “semi-breakdown” she suffered when she was 23 years old. If you remember, she was caught shoplifting and addicted to pills.
“I got really wiped out, and I had a semi-breakdown. I wasn’t sleeping, I didn’t know who I was because of different roles.
“Those things. I think they’re more powerful than people think. People think, ‘Oh, heroin’s the hardest,’ but pills can be…
“I broke my arm in two places. For about a month, I had to take it. But then I just kept taking it for, like… maybe three more weeks. But the thing I do remember is that once my arm was OK and they were still there, you kind of like… “
I’m so glad Winona Ryder is back to making movies! I’ve missed her. She stars in the movie ‘Black Swan’ (along with Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis) as an aging ballerina who’s being pushed aside in favor of the younger dancers.
GQ writer Alex Pappademas thought the role was great for her.
“It’s the best role Ryder has had in years, but you could imagine some actresses having second thoughts about steering straight into that subtext,” writes Pappademas.
As it happens, Ryder, 39, did not. “I thought it was a cool parallel,” she says. “Being replaced by the young thing. I know that definitely happens in Hollywood. It’s harder to find good roles, and suddenly there’s new girls. I’m at that age I’ve been warned my whole life about.”
Winona also shared an interesting encounter with Mel Gibson.
“I remember, like, fifteen years ago, I was at one of those big Hollywood parties. And [Mel] was really drunk. I was with my friend, who’s gay. He made a really horrible gay joke. And somehow it came up that I was Jewish. He said something about ‘oven dodgers,’ but I didn’t get it. I’d never heard that before. It was just this weird, weird moment. I was like, ‘He’s anti-Semitic and he’s homophobic.’ No one believed me!”
I bet people believe her now! Apparently Winona declined to talk about the shoplifting incident, saying it’s something “she tries not to talk about.” You can read the entire interview here.
Winona Ryder sat down with ELLE magazine for their January issue about everything from the internet, her career, and trying to date.
On her experience with the internet:
I don’t use the Internet, but apparently you can find out everything on it.” “I have my e-mail on my BlackBerry, and that’s about it. I’ve never read a blog, ever. I feel like it’s taking away that great anticipation of seeing a movie. It used to be you’d hear, like, Al Pacino was making a movie, and you wouldn’t know anything about it. And nowadays, you know it all, like how much [the actors] are being paid. I would hate to see a picture of me and the caption reads, ‘Is she worth it?’ ”
On trying to date:
I remember being at this bar called Tosca in San Francisco, and I met this guy one night. He was really cute, and we were talking, and then, like, he just said something about how he had always had a crush on me. And I was suddenly mistrustful about why he was talking to me. I wanted to be just a normal girl flirting with a normal guy. It’s like you meet people, and they know this stuff about you. It’s why you want to meet somebody who’s in the same business, only because they understand more. But you don’t necessarily want to be with another actor.”
On being choosy with her roles:
If I don’t relate to the [project], even if it’s something that I should do, it’s hard for me to say yes…I’m the type who’d rather not work than work on something I’m not into. I’ve done that a couple of times, and I feel like I can totally see it in my performance.”
‘Black Swan’ star Winona Ryder (yep, she has a part in the movie as an aging ballerina alongside Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis) sounds like she’s ready to settle down- now that her 40th birthday is approaching. She sees some possibilities in San Francisco, where she lives.
“There’s a lot of cute writers up there,” she says. “I gotta bag me a husband!”
Meanwhile, Winona’s looking to work.
“After these movies, which were a real gift to me, work breeds work,” she tells the paper. “There were a few years where the only thing I was getting offered was [slasher movies]. I wasn’t offered Saw, but those kinds [of movies], or really stupid comedies.” Adds the two-time Oscar nominee, “Right now, I’m trying to be kind of choosy. There’s a few things on the horizon.”

Well, it’s certainly been a while since we’ve seen Winona Ryder because she looks so different to me! Here she is attending last night’s NYC Gotham Film Awards to help promote her upcoming movie ‘Black Swan‘. The film also stars Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis.
Hopefully, this is the movie that keeps Winona Ryder working. She’s an amazing actress and one we should see a lot more of.

Winona Ryder has reportedly revealed that she believes that fame can "drive a person crazy".
The actress admitted that it can all get too much when you read criticism about yourself.
Ryder told The Mirror: "To be looked at and judged, you read something about yourself and you think, 'OK, that's who I am, that's how I should be', it gets very confusing.
"[It] can drive a person crazy, it can!"
Ryder, who plays a ballerina in the new film Black Swan alongside Natalie Portman, added that she had never done ballet before embarking on the role.
She explained: "I haven't had any experience. I've been to the ballet, I saw The Nut Cracker when I was small but that's it!
"We did a photoshoot before I started filming to be on posters when Natalie walks by and even that was so hard to keep those positions."
The star also insisted that she doesn't feel the same ambition as actors who have started their career late in life.
Ryder commented: "I've been asked about ambition before and I don't feel that ambitious because I started so young and it was very fun.
"Both Natalie and I started so young and we didn't really have to go and pound the pavement that much, we don't have that innate ambition of people that start later in their careers." (taheena)
"I had just had my first real BREAK-UP, the first heartbreak. Everybody else just thought I had everything in the world, but inside I was completely LOST... I remember feeling, I can't complain about anything, because I'm so lucky, I'm so lucky."
Out of the many actresses from the GENERATION X-ers, Winona Ryder is the one that I remember the most from growing up. It was her movies that I identified with the most and so did most of my FRIENDS. Winona Ryder is arguably the best known ACTRESS of my generation and has made some of the most influential films of my generation. Heathers, Beetlejuice, Mermaids, Bram Stoker's Dracula, EdwardScissorhands, Reality Bites, How to Make an American Quilt, Little Women, Night on Earth and The Age of Innocence. I admire her choice of film roles. Every film she has done has been really INTERESTING and she really OWNS her characters.

Some of her roles have been played out over and over again in my MEMORY - I cannot tell you how many times I have watched FILMS such as Beetlejuice, Heathers, Dracula, Reality Bites...too many times to count. I think I have taken a little of each character and made it my own over the years.
I LOVED that her Heathers (1989) character Veronica wore a monocle when she wrote in her diary, and I started wearing black a lot more after I became OBSESSED with Lydia Deetz in Beetlejuice. And Lelaini, well lets just say that thrift store fashion became my new obsession. But it was the CHARACTER Finn Dodd that had the greatest INFLUENCE on me because I named one of my daughter's after her. FINN became my daughter Chloe's second name. I loved the struggle that Finn goes through, the strength she find within herself by seeking out the guidance of the MATRIARCHS of her family. The strength and empowerment ILLUSTRATED in the film is so important and very crucial in the development of WISDOM.

"My career was gradual. I didn't do a Pretty Woman movie where suddenly I was a huge star. I started so young that I never had time to be AMBITIOUS because I was already working. What will you draw on for your performances if you just live in this bubble of Hollywood? . .. I am not going to rehash or go over the DRAMA that Winona has been plagued with since her conviction for shoplifting. We've all been there, i.e. done something we aren't PROUD of and had to pay the price, no matter how small. Luckily for most of us, we haven't had to ENDURE the world's press and Papparazzi while going through it.
In 1991 Winona Ryder and Johnny Depp were the KING and QUEEN of Hollywood.
"Well, I shouldn't complain! I had my first real relationship with Johnny, a fiercely deep love that I don't know that I'll ever. .. .The FIRST LOVE is like that isn't it? I don't know today. It was a real wild time back then."
They were the Natalie Wood/Warren Beatty of their time. Winona met JOHNNY when she was 17. He proposed to Winona 5 months after they met. By 20, she was single, alone and HEARTBROKEN.
Winona went on to make some of her BEST films ever but eventually her constant work and not taking time out brought an end to her favourite actress status and we saw her tumble in the LIMELIGHT in a terrible and humiliating fashion.

Winona was Marc Jacobs MUSE for a spell, appearing in advertisements shot by Jurgen Teller. She is known for her passion for VINTAGE clothing and often wears her own finds on screen. In her latest role as Sandra in The Private Lives of Pippa Lee she brought basically her character's wardrobe in her suitcase to the set. "I saw her as thrift-store girl because it was stuff she could afford, and also because I picture her really ROMANTICISING the other eras because she's still searching or her own identity."
